It may not always seem like it, but we do live in very fortunate times. Once upon a time, travel to other parts of the world involved taking your life into your own hands and hoping for the best. Really, international travel was mainly in the realm of the extremely brave, or extraordinarily desperate. Today, although it is difficult in a modern life to really achieve escape velocity, finding yourself in a foreign place surrounded by strange beauty can happen for a few hundred dollars and a short flight. The most uncertain thing is either how you are going to get everything through security without too much hassle, or how you are getting from the airport to your first hotel of the trip.  Now, as long as you have an unlocked smartphone and $10US, you can get a travel sim in your destination country that will show your position in real time on Google Maps and help you translate on the fly.  We are entering into a golden age of really and truly opening the world to the resourceful and the adventurous.  Pauline and I are blessed to live in such fortunate times.  This blog is intended to help show how two people can throw themselves into another culture and language with nothing more than the desire to do so, and to live in another part of the world where life is a unfamiliar and frustrating as it is fascinating and beautiful.  We hope that in doing so we might encourage others to either live vicariously through our experience, or to get a little push to accelerate to gain freedom from possibly decaying orbits.  Or even just the idea to try seeing another part of the world for themselves.
So although Pauline and I have had the luck to expat for an extensive time in Costa Rica, this is the first time we are just charging off into the unknown. As we explore Taiwan and other parts of Asia, join us as we see the world through our eyes, and let us know if you find anything worthwhile, and especially let us know if we missed anything!
