FOOD: NALA’S BURRITO STAND!
Oh yes, there are burritos in Taipei. Today we want to talk about how we stumbled upon one of our favorite food finds in the city! If you don’t know this already, you will quickly realize…. Good Mexican food is nearly impossible to find here in Taipei. Even so-so Mexican food is infrequent and expensive. Nala’s burritos however are just plain good and cheap! So far, they are the best burritos Taipei has to offer! You can snag a veggie burrito for $100NT or for just $10 more you’ve got yourself a chicken burrito. Nala’s is named after it’s super friendly, young Taiwanese owner. When we asked… Nala revealed that she’s never been to North America, let alone Mexico! Instead, she learned what burritos are and how to make them from pinterest! Seriously. Is that not the best thing you’ve heard all day?!
When we first came to the city, neither of us had any kind of background in Chinese except some youtube videos and a Pimsleur CD set we checked out of the public Library. One of the first Mandarin classes we took was at the Mandarin learning academy, a few blocks away from this wonderful little burrito joint. And, almost every evening after class, we had a burrito with Nala. Her English is perfect, and her burritos are filling and only about $3 US, which is great for students. Or anyone who is hungry! She even has hot sauce you can dump on if you like! Pauline was super happy with the basic vegetarian, and I always got the chicken. They are so good we never really tried anything else on the menu. Even now, we make it back across town occasionally just for a big bite.
DIRECTIONS: Leave Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Station from exit 4. And there it is! She’ll happily give you directions to the memorial park from there (just a couple more blocks down) as well as other suggestions for bars and restaurants in the area.
